Main Types of RV Rocking Chairs

There are two main types of portable rocking chairs designed for camping. Both are folding models and fit conveniently into an RV.

Metal-Framed

The first type is a metal-framed folding rocker with a fabric seat. There are various options of this type of chair available, but two popular models are the Quick Chair – Rocker and the Elite Folding Rocker.

The Quick Chair – Rocker is constructed with a steel frame and described as an oversized chair. The seat is made of heavy-duty denier polyester, features the extra-tall back, extra pillow padding and includes cup holders on each arm of the chair. The chair can also be used as a regular sitting chair, as the rockers can be removed from the chair. Its measurements are 32.5 inches by 29.5 inches by 43 inches. It is foldable and can be taken “on the go.” This chair can be purchased at several locations including discount stores, camping outlet stores or outdoor suppliers.

The Elite Folding Rocker by Prime Products is framed with gray tubular steel. Its seat is midnight blue in color. The design boasts that it is more comfortable than many foldable chairs because the bar that crosses at the front of most chairs is absent. Increasing the safety factor of the chair, a special latch ensures stability in the proper position. Weighing 12.5 pounds, the chair’s dimensions are 23 inches wide by 35 inches high by 28 inches deep.

Wooden Framed

The second type of RV rocking chairs is a wooden framed type.

The wooden folding rocking chair uses a sling seat design to provide comfort and relaxation. It has a built-in pillow and is constructed of fabric that is resistant to both stains and mildew. The chair has a versatile pattern that allows it to maintain three positions. It can fold out to be a cot, or it can fold up or it can rock.

Criteria for a Good Rocking Chair

When thinking about what kind of a rocking chair you need for your RV and campsite, there are a few things to consider.

Size

When considering a rocking chair for your campsite, you’ll need to determine the size first. To just casually sit by the fire and rock, a standard sized chair would be appropriate. However, if you have young children whom you want to rock to sleep, an oversized chair would be better.

Stability of Rockers

Depending on where you do the most camping, the stability of your rockers is very important. If you typically camp at a campground with level, maintained campsites, you won’t have to worry quite so much about the stability of your rockers. However, if your camping style is a little more rugged and you habitually visit campsites off the beaten path, then you may want to invest in a sturdier RV rocking chair. However, no matter how sturdy your chair is, it’s never wise to set up on unleveled ground.

Weight Limit

Some chairs have limits to what they can safely hold. If you are a person of larger proportions or if you will be rocking a child, weight limits of chairs may be of interest to you.

Convenience of Chair Set-Up

Although some aspects of camping are a lot of work, you won’t want setting up your chair to be a hassle. Select a chair that is easy for you to carry and lock into position.

Chair Safety

Anytime you’re using a portable, foldable chair, you face the risk of the chair not being set up correctly. A chair that has a safety latch will help ensure proper set up. This will help your chair to avoid collapsing when you sit in it.

Places to Buy Chairs

Most outdoor suppliers such as Cabela’s, Bass Pro Stores and Dick’s Sporting Goods will carry a variety of chairs that will add appeal to those quiet evenings at your campsite. Sometimes the best thing to do is to go and try these chairs out. That way you know they are comfortable, sturdy and fit your needs.

Camping trips are fun. Plus, they’re even more fun when you have the appropriate gear and supplies. When you can sit by your campsite in comfort, rocking along in the breeze, you know it’s a satisfying camping trip.
