Five Sites for Online Campfire Stories Scary Enough For Anyone
Some stories are classic -- the call came from inside the house!! -- while others bring fresh chills to the campfire huddle. Here are five sites offering up a selection of both. You can print, and in some cases get audio recordings, of the stories, but best results always come from memorizing and retelling the stories with proper intonation for maximum dramatic effect.
Based on the popular book series, the American Folklore section for campfire tales features dozens of short stories suitable for a night in the wild. The stories are sorted by categories so as to find the best fits for smaller children, while older kids can enjoy the scarier fare. There are also plain tall tales and funny stories to round out the collection.
The Boy Scouts know a thing or two about camping, so why not tap over a century of campfire storytelling to prepare for your next outing? Like the previous entry, this collection of stories range from the silly and amusing to blood-soaked stories of killers and monsters.
The Ultimate Camp Resource website has a ton of useful information for campers, so of course there's a dedicated page for stories that'll scare the daylights out of those not careful.
KOA, the intentionally misspelled organization Kampgrounds of America, offers tons of good advice on camping. Naturally, that includes campfire stories. Here is a link to KOA award winners for best and scariest. Like some others in this list, you can also download the stories in audio format. Don't forget to click the bottom link for even more stories!
Finally, Camping Trip Fun has a slim but well-written selection of scary stories. These are mostly classics no storyteller should head into the woods without!
More on Scary Stories
Of course, online campfire stories scary for small children may not be enough for teens or adults. How about a true story about a double murder on the popular Appalachian trail? In fact, here are a whopping five true stories, seemingly just made for the slightly older kids.
However, this brings us to your role as the storyteller. Remember to use your good judgment, especially if you're telling your stories to a mixed audience. Sure, the older kids may yawn, but always let the youngest in the company set the bar for how ghoulish the tales should be allowed to become. Camping is supposed to be about good, wholesome fun for the whole family, and terrifying little Billy in order to entertain Judy isn't the way to go. Having said that, no camping trip is complete without a few good stories, so find the right balance and you're set for a great outing. Good luck!
