Coleman Folding Camping Trailers
From LoveToKnow Camping
Coleman folding camping trailers have been a household name since 1967. Commonly known as "pop-up" campers, Coleman folding trailers are a unique and economical way to venture into the outdoors. Many things have changed in American culture, but the love for the folding camping trailer is as big as ever.
History of the Coleman Folding Camping Trailer
Coleman camping trailers were originally developed and marketed by the Coleman Company. The history of the company and the products has seen many changes throughout the years:
- In 1967, The Coleman Company started production of the first Coleman folding trailer in Somerset, Pennsylvania. This state-of-the-art production facility was designed to produce some of the highest quality camping trailers in the world.
- In 1979, the Coleman brand camping trailer became North America's #1 selling brand, a position that has been maintained ever since. The Coleman Company accredited this to innovative thinking, engineering, and manufacturing, as well as a caring customer service of the Somerset facility.
- In 1989, Fleetwood Enterprises Inc purchased Coleman Recreation Vehicles Inc., becoming a full-line manufacturer of recreation vehicles of all sizes. Previous to the acquisition of Coleman, Fleetwood was known for their popular recreational vehicles (RVs). With the Somerset facility's reputation and Fleetwood's dedicated focus sales and market share, sales and business grew.
- In 2003, Fleetwood decided to stop using the Coleman brand, choosing instead to let the Fleetwood name carry on the continuing accomplishments of the Somerset facility.
Today, the Somerset facility is over 11 acres in size, and is capable of making 100 camping trailers a day. Maintaining the same dedication to the product design and manufacturing is a matter of pride to the employees of the Somerset facility.
Fleetwood is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first camping trailer in 2007. The company expects a 40th anniversary product line to be available for purchase in the very near future.
What to Expect in a Folding Camping Trailer
Today's folding camping trailers have many more options than the original models. With too many accessories to list here, we will go over some of the available options that might be useful for everyone.
- Awnings – Awnings are available in many different sizes and colors. A good awing can give you extra shade and provide shelter from bugs.
- Power Lift – A power lift system is available. This option has a mechanical unit that will unfold your camping trailer with the push of a button.
- Air Conditioning – Having air conditioning in your camping trailer will feel like a blessing on hot summer nights.
Trailer Styles
There are many different styles of folding camping trailers available for today's active families. Not only can you tow your sleeping quarters to the campsite, some models are designed with places to carry ATV's right on the camping trailer. Known as ATV tent trailers, these models are designed to go where the road stops and the trail begins. You can also find fiberglass and expanding camping trailers that contain the modern accessories of a modern home.
Conclusion
Even if you cannot get a brand new Coleman folding camping trailer, with the dedication that The Coleman Company began and Fleetwood continues, you will still be able to purchase a quality folding camping trailer for years to come. With all the advances on the Internet you can purchase almost any Coleman camping trailer in most any condition, and restore it just the way you want.
You can also buy one of the newer Fleetwood models with confidence. Fleetwood believes that a satisfied customer is the best advertisement. With beliefs like that, you can rest assured you are buying a quality product that the manufacturer will stand behind.
