About Big Meadows Campground
Big Meadows is the largest treeless area in Shenandoah National Park. This picturesque area engulfs an enormous barren plateau which consists of about 640 acres. The area was originally one thousand acres. The flora of this region is abundant and spectacular. The dominant shrub is blueberry. There are also swamp varieties of marsh marigold, swamp fern, and Canadian burnet. These varieties tend to be found in wetter areas of the marsh. There are about 270 species of vascular plants in this area.
The fauna in the campground is also impressive. Whitetail deer wander aimlessly through the meadow, meandering between colorful vegetation and flowing water. Meadowlarks, song sparrows, foxes, grouse, and skunks also roam the area freely. Hiking trails are scenic, and there are numerous trails to choose from. It is common to see wildlife while hiking in this natural wonderland. Three amazing waterfalls are also close by.
Though the campground is secluded, there are still major facilities nearby. A nice element of the campground is that RV and Tent camping areas are separated, so tent campers won't be kept awake all night by the noise from the RV generators.
